Chatting with CLAUDIA RIVERA

Also known as Crocoqueen, is a Franco-Peruvian artist who channels her migrant roots into deeply emotional, community-driven, and powerful work. Her visual language blends Andean traditions with urban and digital influences, reclaiming hybrid identities and spaces of representation. From Paris, she creates images, projects, and platforms like Amaru Agency that spotlight the Latin American diaspora. For her, art is resistance, healing, and an act of love for her community.

Who is Claudia Rivera? And how did Crocoqueen come to be? Do you remember the moment that artistic identity first took shape?

Claudia Rivera is a French-Peruvian artist—born in Paris to Peruvian parents.

I always say that my work is about making my community feel alive and present in Paris, whether through events, editorials, social media content, or exhibitions. Crocoqueen was born from that cultural journey—it started as a nickname my friends used on Instagram, but over time it became my artistic name, an essential part of me. For me, Crocoqueen is the space where I allow myself to be free, bold, and fearless in my creativity; while Claudia is my more intimate, shy, and sensitive side. I feel that one protects the other, and together they enable me to exist and tell my story honestly—between France and Peru, between the personal and the collective.

Your projects always convey a vibrant Andean energy, yet also urban and global. How would you describe your visual and aesthetic language?

To me, my visual language is born from that crossroads: being the child of migrants, growing up in Paris with my heart in Peru. There’s something deeply Andean in the colors, symbols, and the communal, emotional connection, but at the same time all of that blends with urban, digital, global influences. I’m drawn to playing between the intimate and the collective, the traditional and the contemporary—creating images that celebrate my people, our roots, and how we reinvent ourselves in the cities where we live. My aesthetic is very emotional, sometimes a bit raw, but always infused with a deep love for who we are and everything we carry inside us.

What does it mean to you to be a Latin American creative living and working in Europe? What contradictions or gifts does that bring?

For me, it’s both beautiful and extremely challenging. It means constantly resisting and fighting for space—because nothing here is built for us; nothing is waiting for us. But that’s precisely the beautiful part: everything is there to be created, and it’s us—our generation—who is doing it.
It’s a constant contradiction: feeling like I belong neither here nor there, having to explain myself, justify myself, break prejudices. Yet at the same time, I know it’s a tremendous creative force. It allows me to carry my roots, heritage, and family with me—and blend them with what I experience here to create something new, something that truly belongs to us. Being a Latin American creative in Europe is about opening spaces that didn’t exist, telling stories that weren’t heard, and above all paving the way for those who come after us to dream bigger and fear less.

We know Paris can be tough but also deeply inspiring. How has this city influenced you as an artist?

Paris is a tough city—it demands a lot of you, and sometimes you feel there's no room for someone like you, especially coming from a migrant family. But at the same time, it’s incredibly inspiring. You grow up surrounded by countless communities and diverse cultures sharing the same small space, and that’s beautiful. From a young age, you learn to navigate between worlds, listen to stories, share codes, and blend identities. That has been a huge gift as an artist: it taught me to see the world with more complexity, to find beauty in intersections and what doesn’t quite fit. Paris has made me strong, it has made me dream big, but above all, it has shown me that when there’s no place for you, you can invent one—surrounded by your people.

Which creative influences have nourished you? They might be artists, songs, places, or even foods.

My greatest inspirations are my family and close friends. Everything I create originates from them—from our shared stories and daily connections.

What was the first project that truly felt like yours? What made it so special, and how did you get noticed?

My first project was Nanaykuna in 2022, born from the desire to highlight Latina women in France. It combined photography and an event. That’s when I realized we needed these spaces—that there was a real need to represent ourselves, share our stories, and build community. It was the project where I first felt that my voice and those of my community belonged.

Many of your works feel like visual rituals. How do you incorporate your cultural roots into each project without falling into cliché?

I strive to stay as real as possible. My projects don’t arise from an aesthetic search or a desire to represent something “folkloric.” They are a direct extension of who I am, my history, and what I carry within me. I don’t think about “incorporating” my roots—they’re already part of me, and they naturally appear in what I create—in the colors, emotions, references, even wounds. For me, the important thing is to speak from a place of honesty, because when something is genuine, it connects without needing to be forced or become a cliché.

What has been the greatest challenge you’ve faced in the European creative world? Making a living from it is essential to stay in the industry and life in general. Was the journey long to get there?

The biggest challenge has been earning a living doing this. Creating is beautiful, but sustaining it financially—especially coming from a migrant family—is another story. I don’t have a network or financial backing; everything has been built piece by piece, through pure effort. It’s been a long journey (and it still is), filled with doubts and moments when I thought about giving up—but also full of learning and growth.

Tell us about Amaru Agency. How did this collective/agency start, and where is it headed?

Amaru Agency was born from a desire to create space to showcase Latin American creatives in Europe—to tell our stories in our own voices. It started as a small, intimate project and gradually grew into an agency that combines creative direction, production, and cultural representation. My dream is for Amaru to become an international platform, connecting communities and opening doors so that more artists of our generation can shine, be seen, and make a living from their art.

Do you have any routine or ritual before starting a creative project?

Honestly, I don't have any routine or ritual. I just dive in, letting ideas and emotions guide me, trusting that the process will take me where I need to go.

What upcoming projects are you excited about? Is there anything you can share that you're particularly thrilled about?

I can’t reveal much yet, but there are many beautiful things coming—things that excite me deeply. I’m in a moment of intense creation and growth, so soon there will be news.

Chatting with CLOE GALASSO

Cloe Galasso, an artist born in vibrant Buenos Aires, is pure creative instinct. Her language is raw material, and her manifesto: hands stained with color. In the midst of contemporary chaos, art is her compass and sanctuary. For Cloe, creating isn’t just a passion — it’s a way of being alive.

What’s the first thing that appears when you begin a work: an image, an emotion, or an energy?

I think the starting point varies depending on the piece. Sometimes the image comes first, almost like a sudden vision, and it usually carries a very clear emotion, as if that feeling needs to take shape. Other times, the trigger is a more subtle sensation: the energy I perceive in a space, a situation, or even a fleeting moment. It’s as if something vibrates in the air and pushes me to translate it visually. In both cases, what guides the process is a deep connection with the intangible, with that force you feel before you can name it.

Your figures seem suspended in an in-between space. What role does emptiness play in your work?

For me, emptiness is an active space, not an absence. In my work, emptiness isn’t just the background or what surrounds the figures — it’s a presence in itself, a vibrational field where anything can emerge.

I work a lot with the idea of the “in-between,” that intermediate space where forms are not fully defined but are already loaded with intention. I’m drawn to that moment before a final form, where there’s still mystery, possibility, openness. It’s a fertile space where the invisible begins to take shape.

That “emptiness” also resonates deeply with Eastern philosophies, where emptiness isn’t a void, but a container of potential energy. I like to think of my figures as floating or suspended there — not because they’re lost, but because they’re in transition, connected to something more subtle.

What did you discover about yourself in moving from design and ceramics to oil painting?

I discovered that everything we do eventually becomes a tool for what comes next. Having worked in design and ceramics gave me a strong foundation — not just technically, but in terms of visual thinking and sensitivity. Switching to oil painting felt like opening a new door, but carrying a suitcase full of past experiences that allowed me to move more freely. I realized that being multidisciplinary doesn’t just make you more versatile; it also trains you to solve problems, adapt, and flow through the challenges of the creative process. Everything leaves a mark, and in some way, everything connects.

What role does the spiritual — not as dogma, but as vibration — play in your work?

Since I began exploring energy — especially the concept of “Qi” in Chinese tradition — my artistic practice has become a channel to tune into those subtle forces, not as dogma, but as vibrations that run through all things.

To me, spirituality isn’t a series of abstract ideas: it’s a physical, almost sensory experience. When I’m in the studio, I close my eyes and hold a piece of clay — I’m not thinking of preconceived shapes. I let the feeling of energy manifest through my hands, and from there, a figure emerges — one that later repeats and comes to life in my work.

Do you want your works to be understood or felt?

Honestly, I care about both. I’m deeply moved when someone stands in front of a piece and, without needing any explanation, connects with its meaning through observation and emotion. It’s a very special moment when someone approaches and asks if what they felt is what I wanted to express — because that’s when I know the work spoke for itself. Ideally, I want the piece to be felt first and then, if desired, understood. Art has that unique ability to bypass the rational and touch something deeper.

What’s it like to begin monetizing your work as an emerging artist? Is that an important part of thinking about art?

Starting to monetize your work isn’t easy, and in my opinion, it depends a lot on where you're based and how the local market works. For me, the first and maybe most important step was treating being an artist as seriously as any other job. That means applying discipline and devoting a set number of hours per day not just to making art, but to all the other tasks that are part of developing an artistic career.

We often want to just be creating in the studio — at least I do — but there are other things to do that play a key role in monetization, and they’re not always the most enjoyable tasks for an artist.

What have you learned from showing your work in such different places as Buenos Aires, New York, and London?

I’m very grateful to have had the chance to show my work in such diverse cities. Each place has its own energy, its own way of looking — and that has enriched me immensely. Seeing how people from different cultures relate to my work, how they interpret it through their own references and sensitivities, really opened my eyes. It helped me understand that the artwork lives on beyond me. It’s a constant exchange: I bring something of myself to those places, and at the same time, each place transforms me.

What has been your biggest challenge as a young artist in a city like New York?

I think the biggest challenge has been balancing the city’s fast pace with my work and staying focused on my personal goals. New York is full of events — especially art-related ones — throughout the year. There’s so much activity, inspiration, and opportunity, but all of that can also be distracting. At the same time, that’s what makes the city so valuable — you’re constantly bumping into inspiration, people, or conversations that fuel your creativity. It’s a double-edged sword, and you have to know how to handle it so you don’t get lost in the noise.

When have you felt fear in your creative journey, and how did you overcome it?

I felt a lot of fear when I moved to New York. The city seemed huge, overwhelming, and I was in a moment of deep uncertainty: I wasn’t even sure if I really wanted to continue down the path of art, which I had only just begun a year before arriving. But luckily, the path began to reveal itself little by little. The signs started to show up, small doors began to open, and with each step I understood that I was going in the right direction. For me, the key was to surrender fully to the work — with effort, consistency, and commitment — until things slowly began to align with my purpose.

Was it hard for you to recognize yourself as an artist? Was there a turning point when you said: “this is what I’m meant to do”?

At first it was hard, especially because I wasn’t even sure I could call myself an “artist.” That doubt came from personal insecurity, fueled by the elitism that often surrounds the art world. For a long time, I felt that the title didn’t belong to me. But over time, I understood something fundamental: we’re all artists in potential, and what truly defines the role is dedication, discipline, and commitment to what we do.



I always knew I wanted to work in something art-related, but when I studied graphic design, I felt something was missing — like I hadn’t quite found my place. The day I painted with oil for the first time, I felt it with total clarity: this is it. That’s when everything started to make sense.

What would you say to your 20-year-old self, who was just beginning to paint without knowing what was ahead?

Well, I started painting at 24, so I’d tell my 20-year-old self to start as soon as possible. To dare to play, to experiment, to enjoy without fear. I’d tell her to read a lot about art history, to get lost in museums, to go to every exhibition she can. To immerse herself in painting like diving into a freezing pool on the hottest day of the year: fully, without overthinking, with passion and excitement. Because art doesn’t wait — but it always rewards those who leap.

Chatting with MABS KHAKWANI

Mabs Khakwani transforms makeup into visual storytelling—bold, artistic, and deeply emotional. Moving between Dubai and Paris, she blends tradition and modernity with a clean, sophisticated aesthetic. She has collaborated with Dior, Chanel, and Bvlgari, always leaving her unique creative mark. Inspired by classic cinema, culture, and everyday moments, her work goes far beyond the surface. For Mabs, makeup is art, language, and freedom.

Your work has a very artistic and texture-rich visual identity. How would you define your style as a makeup artist, and what influences have shaped that aesthetic?

I see makeup as a medium not only to divulge in my creative world of textures, hues and imagery, but also to have that poignant human connection with my clients. I would define myself as a rather fearless, unconventional storyteller. To me, my work as an artist must bring forth the inner child of passion, colour and freedom which is reflective of my work. My culture, tradition and childhood have played a huge role in shaping this aesthetic.

You have collaborated with brands like Dior, Chanel, and Bvlgari. What was your first approach to these major fashion houses, and what did you learn from those experiences?

I’ve had the privilege and honour to work with these amazing brands and teams like Dior, Chanel and Bvlgari mostly through publications that have highlighted either their newest beauty launches and products or jewellery. I would say my learning experience would be taking in and understanding the brand’s aesthetic and somehow giving my personal creative touch while highlighting the product in a very subtle or emphatic manner depending on the client’s needs.

What was the moment or project that felt like a true turning point in your career?

I would say the Boucheron Campaign that I did back in 2022.

Your work between Dubai and Paris, two very different fashion scenes. How does that cultural duality reflect in your creative process?

I rather not be identified by a “certain” culture or geographical disposition in terms of my work. Even though the fashion scenes and mindset are significantly different, in some ways I endeavour to create a good balance keeping in mind the rich tradition of United Arab Emirates through my work in the beauty industry.

What challenges have you faced as an artist in such a competitive industry, especially as a Pakistani woman navigating the international fashion world?

Unfortunately, the challenges have been very much prevalent throughout my makeup career, even till date… especially living in this part of the world where there is limited access to working with a diverse number of photographers, models, stylists, at times one finds oneself entwined in a creatively frustrating web.

You’ve worked on award-winning fashion films and conceptual editorials. What differences do you find between doing makeup for the camera versus the runway?

In my opinion, all genres of makeup stem from good skin and hydration. The prep is vital in doing all sorts of makeup. However, the Runway Makeup versus Camera or Film differs in various ways such as lighting, direction, application of makeup, brands, etc… so alignment is key in creating a visual story and delivering an aesthetic of the brand. For example, in Runway the lighting is harsh, hence makeup artists are required to emphasise a clean, balanced skin tone with subtle highlights and shadows. The makeup needs to look flawless from all angles even under intense lighting, versus in Camera or Film the matte foundations and powders are applied to combat shine. Warm natural tones are favoured over cooler and brighter tones as they tend to look more realistic on camera.

What are some of the most common mistakes you see in editorial makeup, and how do you avoid them in your own work?

Working against the aesthetics of the brand or the mood board, and creating a look that is too polished or refined and not reflective of the brand’s / client’s identity. I try to avoid such mistakes by having a detailed discussion with the creative director prior to the shoot in order to be aligned with their requirements for the specific project.

How important is storytelling and narrative in the way you create makeup looks for shoots or campaigns?

Storytelling is pivotal in creating a certain makeup look for a campaign or shoot. The narrative has to be cohesive. Multiple ideas or makeup looks can be extremely chaotic and can lead to total disarray.

Do you have any creative rituals before diving into a new project or editorial session?

I like to meditate followed by a rigorous workout before I dive into my creative realm of self-discovery. This ritual really helps me focus on my work.

What dreams or goals would you like to achieve in the coming years? Is there a brand, city, or person you dream of collaborating with?

Well, my goal in the coming years would be to work internationally with amazing, talented artists and to have an international presence. I would love to collaborate with the amazing photographer Zhong Lin whose amalgamation of art and fashion sets her a world apart in this field.

What inspires you outside the world of makeup? Are there any forms of art, music or film that feed your creative vision?

I’m inspired every single moment in my life! Whether it be my travels to a Moroccan rug shop or a Pakistani wedding where the colours and textures play a visual delight to the senses. Sometimes the mere simplicity and art of being served at a Japanese restaurant helps my mind conjure a new world of makeup ideas and how to implement them in a unique and different manner.

The movie Roman Holiday and Audrey Hepburn uniquely feed my creative vision. Audrey’s flawless skin and doe eyes is my forever favourite makeup look.

In such a demanding industry, how do you take care of your mental health and stay grounded as both an artist and a person?

I have a simple rule of staying focused and grounded.

Haha… that’s a fun question!
When I was sent on my first job as a makeup artist I thought my heart would pop out of my chest as I was so nervous and anxious… however, as I reached the client I made her feel so calm and came across as so confident in my demeanour that she really thought I had been doing makeup in the industry for long!
For me, that was wild!

Chatting with DANA KEREN

Her passion for set design began with immersive theatre and visual art experiences, deeply influenced by artists like Naomi Okubo. She embraces mistakes as part of the creative process, maintaining a clear and emotionally resonant visual identity. Through personal projects like miniatures and painting, she aims to preserve fleeting ideas and evoke powerful first impressions.

What was the first image or feeling that made you think, “this is what I want to do”?

I was first introduced to the world of set design through musical theatre. I’m originally from a small town, but one summer, my family had the opportunity to live in New York. I think we saw a different musical every week. One experience that particularly stayed with me was an immersive exhibition at the Fashion Institute of Technology — CFDA Celebrates 50 Years of Fashion. The scale and beauty of these productions left a deep impression on me.

I’ve always found inspiration through the world of painting. When I studied painting at around age 14, I stumbled upon the work of Japanese artists called Naomi Okubo, she paints these elaborate, highly detailed pattern-filled spaces with mysterious figures. Her paintings are full of patterns and often depict focus on the space around her subject. Looking at my career path, and my love for her paintings, I can see how the two connect.

A creative’s identity is essential when it comes to being considered for projects, and success in the industry often depends on it.

How did you arrive at your own identity, and how do you maintain it over time?

I’m definitely still in the process of discovering my creative identity — I don’t think I’ve fully found it and that’s okay. Sometimes, when you’re unsure of exactly who or what you are creatively, you’ll learn what you’re not. For example, I know I’m naturally drawn to colour, texture, and richness. If someone is looking for a minimalist aesthetic, it’s simply not how my creative brain works — that’s not the kind of projects I take on.

It’s also important to consistently curate your work and communicate your ideas clearly. Especially in fast-paced environments, it’s easy to rely on long presentations or throw in too many references, but I believe clarity is key. The more focused the message, the stronger the work comes across.
Maintaining a strong visual identity online is another way I stay aligned with my creative direction. I treat digital presence with the same care I would give a brand — ensuring my website, logo, social content, and imagery all feel cohesive and intentional. Social media has played a huge role in building my network and generating work opportunities. While I don’t create content in the same way an influencer might, I still approach it strategically, with a clear understanding of how I want my work to be seen and understood.

What role does error play in your creative process?

Error is a big part of my creative process — whether I like it or not! Honestly, some of my favourite ideas have come from things not going to plan. A material behaves differently than expected, a reference takes me somewhere unexpected, or a last-minute change forces me to rethink everything. It can be frustrating in the moment, but those “mistakes” often push me to be more creative.
Especially in set design, nothing ever goes exactly as imagined — there are so many moving parts. I’ve learned not to panic when something goes wrong, but to treat it as part of the process. Sometimes those little errors lead to something way more interesting or human than what I had in mind in the first place.

We live in a world saturated with images. How do you make sure yours breathe—and how do you avoid burnout when seeking inspiration?

Sometimes I seek inspiration outside of social media and often turn to books when I have the time. Researching online can be exhausting — it feels endless, and it’s so easy to get distracted with other links. With books, you can focus entirely on one thing without the noise. I also visit exhibitions and shows as often as I can. I take photos or collect images from these experiences and slowly build a catalogue of references based on things I’ve actually seen in real life. It feels more meaningful and grounded to work from real-life encounters rather than just scrolling through content online.

Is there any emotion or concept you’re currently exploring? Something new that’s drawing you in?
One personal project I have in mind is turning some of the concepts that come out of the stage design process — or even the final designs themselves — into paintings. As much as I love working on live events, they’re temporary by nature. We put so much effort into refining and perfecting the design, but often some of the original ideas get lost along the way. Plus, the final outcome is usually only seen by a limited audience, and it exists for just a brief moment. I’m trying to find a way to preserve that work and give it a new life.
Another personal project I’d love to pursue is a Walter Wick-style photoshoot, creating imaginary worlds using miniature models. I’ve always loved the art of miniature making — I learned the craft at university but haven’t had the time to explore it in depth due to tight schedules. I find miniatures so beautiful and fun to make, and it feels like a dying art form. It’s also a great solution for a personal project, as you can build quite elaborate scenes with very little material waste.

What influences or figures inspire and fulfill you?
When I was starting out, I looked into Es Devlin’s work a lot — I think I listened to pretty much every talk she’s ever given. I was really drawn to the way she thinks about space and performance. More recently, I’ve been following David Stark. I came across his book in the library and was immediately hooked. He’s an event designer, and his work is honestly incredible. Some are super fun, really creative, and every little detail feels so thoughtful and clever.

What details do you focus on when starting a project, and what’s your process from concept to delivery?
I’m also always thinking practically from the start: what’s the budget, what are the limitations, and how can we be clever within them?
Once the concept is clear, I usually create a moodboard or visual deck to communicate the idea clearly, and then start sketching or building rough 3D models or mockups. I really like to figure things out by making — whether that’s small physical models or digital ones — it helps me solve problems early on.

From there, it’s a lot of refining: working closely with fabricators, making sure the design is buildable, and always thinking about how it will work in the real world — especially if it’s a touring show or temporary installation. On delivery days, I like to be really hands-on. There’s always something that changes last minute, and I try to stay flexible while making sure the final result still feels true to the original idea.

Do you constantly feel the need to reinvent yourself?
I don’t feel the need to constantly reinvent myself — every job I do is already so incredibly different from the last that the circumstances kind of do it for me. As a set designer, you end up being a bit of a jack of all trades. You’re constantly shifting between styles, formats, teams, and techniques, so reinvention sort of happens naturally. I might not be a master of one specific discipline, but I think that ability to adapt is actually a strength in this field.

What would you like someone to feel or think when they encounter your work for the first time?
Honestly? I want them to gasp — like, uncontrollably. I want that instant, emotional reaction where someone sees the scene and goes, “wow!”

Where helps you escape distraction from the noise of the world? Any book you’d recommend?
I enjoy working — it’s the one thing that properly shuts out all the noise. But I’ve realised there’s a difference between feeling relaxed and actually relaxing. For me, relaxing is more like painting or sketching with a really good playlist on in the background.

JACK ANTONOFF ANNOUNCES THE CREATION OF LGTB+ SAFE RECORDING STUDIOS Jack Antonoff, known worldwide as one of the best producers of the 21st century, has announced that his new professional project will be the creation of recording studios focused on the safety of the LGTBIQ+ community. 

Known for his role as the producer of some of the most successful projects of the last decade, and in the middle of his participation in Lana del Rey's new album “Lasso”, Jack Antonoff announced last Tuesday through an Instagram post that, as part of his career and using his resources and possibilities, he will take the lead in the building of spaces for vulnerable groups to embark on the artistic creation journey. 

One they haven’t always been allowed to fully enjoy due to unfair social misconceptions. Using his own experience as an example of creative enjoyment and liberty, the leader of Bleachers mentioned that, despite his love and trajectory in home and clandestine studios, his true art was born thanks to the access to recording studios, which included infinite innovative possibilities that helped him grow as an individual and as an artist. 

Based on this, he emphasized the unfairness of the discrimination imposed against minority groups in all areas, including the cultural field, which is ironically built off a high percentage of queer people who not only bring quality and diversity, but whom without the industry wouldn’t survive. Jack Antonoff is not, however, the first artist who has showed solidarity and raised awareness about the importance of equal opportunities in creative terms. And, especially, in music. 

Others like ROSALÍA have already started building recording studios in places bathed in xenophobic and discriminatory stigma, such as Hospitalet de Llobregat, a slightly isolated neighborhood in Barcelona (Spain), but filled with talent that deserves to be recognized on a global scale. In addition, and in spite of being a long-term proposal, Antonoff has taken the opportunity to mention that this will be a joint project with anyone who wishes to offer their bit and contribute to the cause, inviting everyone to contact him to build an affordable and accessible industry.
