Chatting with CLAUDIA RIVERA
Also known as Crocoqueen, is a Franco-Peruvian artist who channels her migrant roots into deeply emotional, community-driven, and powerful work. Her visual language blends Andean traditions with urban and digital influences, reclaiming hybrid identities and spaces of representation. From Paris, she creates images, projects, and platforms like Amaru Agency that spotlight the Latin American diaspora. For her, art is resistance, healing, and an act of love for her community.
+ INTREVIEW
Who is Claudia Rivera? And how did Crocoqueen come to be? Do you remember the moment that artistic identity first took shape?
Claudia Rivera is a French-Peruvian artist—born in Paris to Peruvian parents.
I always say that my work is about making my community feel alive and present in Paris, whether through events, editorials, social media content, or exhibitions. Crocoqueen was born from that cultural journey—it started as a nickname my friends used on Instagram, but over time it became my artistic name, an essential part of me. For me, Crocoqueen is the space where I allow myself to be free, bold, and fearless in my creativity; while Claudia is my more intimate, shy, and sensitive side. I feel that one protects the other, and together they enable me to exist and tell my story honestly—between France and Peru, between the personal and the collective.
Your projects always convey a vibrant Andean energy, yet also urban and global. How would you describe your visual and aesthetic language?
To me, my visual language is born from that crossroads: being the child of migrants, growing up in Paris with my heart in Peru. There’s something deeply Andean in the colors, symbols, and the communal, emotional connection, but at the same time all of that blends with urban, digital, global influences. I’m drawn to playing between the intimate and the collective, the traditional and the contemporary—creating images that celebrate my people, our roots, and how we reinvent ourselves in the cities where we live. My aesthetic is very emotional, sometimes a bit raw, but always infused with a deep love for who we are and everything we carry inside us.
What does it mean to you to be a Latin American creative living and working in Europe? What contradictions or gifts does that bring?
For me, it’s both beautiful and extremely challenging. It means constantly resisting and fighting for space—because nothing here is built for us; nothing is waiting for us. But that’s precisely the beautiful part: everything is there to be created, and it’s us—our generation—who is doing it.
It’s a constant contradiction: feeling like I belong neither here nor there, having to explain myself, justify myself, break prejudices. Yet at the same time, I know it’s a tremendous creative force. It allows me to carry my roots, heritage, and family with me—and blend them with what I experience here to create something new, something that truly belongs to us. Being a Latin American creative in Europe is about opening spaces that didn’t exist, telling stories that weren’t heard, and above all paving the way for those who come after us to dream bigger and fear less.
We know Paris can be tough but also deeply inspiring. How has this city influenced you as an artist?
Paris is a tough city—it demands a lot of you, and sometimes you feel there's no room for someone like you, especially coming from a migrant family. But at the same time, it’s incredibly inspiring. You grow up surrounded by countless communities and diverse cultures sharing the same small space, and that’s beautiful. From a young age, you learn to navigate between worlds, listen to stories, share codes, and blend identities. That has been a huge gift as an artist: it taught me to see the world with more complexity, to find beauty in intersections and what doesn’t quite fit. Paris has made me strong, it has made me dream big, but above all, it has shown me that when there’s no place for you, you can invent one—surrounded by your people.
Which creative influences have nourished you? They might be artists, songs, places, or even foods.
My greatest inspirations are my family and close friends. Everything I create originates from them—from our shared stories and daily connections.
What was the first project that truly felt like yours? What made it so special, and how did you get noticed?
My first project was Nanaykuna in 2022, born from the desire to highlight Latina women in France. It combined photography and an event. That’s when I realized we needed these spaces—that there was a real need to represent ourselves, share our stories, and build community. It was the project where I first felt that my voice and those of my community belonged.
Many of your works feel like visual rituals. How do you incorporate your cultural roots into each project without falling into cliché?
I strive to stay as real as possible. My projects don’t arise from an aesthetic search or a desire to represent something “folkloric.” They are a direct extension of who I am, my history, and what I carry within me. I don’t think about “incorporating” my roots—they’re already part of me, and they naturally appear in what I create—in the colors, emotions, references, even wounds. For me, the important thing is to speak from a place of honesty, because when something is genuine, it connects without needing to be forced or become a cliché.
If your aesthetic were a playlist, what three songs couldn’t be missing?
“No podrás olvidarme” by Los Apus
“Siempre Seré” by Tito Rojas
“La Ritournelle” by Sébastien Tellier
(laughs) I love love.
What has been the greatest challenge you’ve faced in the European creative world? Making a living from it is essential to stay in the industry and life in general. Was the journey long to get there?
The biggest challenge has been earning a living doing this. Creating is beautiful, but sustaining it financially—especially coming from a migrant family—is another story. I don’t have a network or financial backing; everything has been built piece by piece, through pure effort. It’s been a long journey (and it still is), filled with doubts and moments when I thought about giving up—but also full of learning and growth.
Tell us about Amaru Agency. How did this collective/agency start, and where is it headed?
Amaru Agency was born from a desire to create space to showcase Latin American creatives in Europe—to tell our stories in our own voices. It started as a small, intimate project and gradually grew into an agency that combines creative direction, production, and cultural representation. My dream is for Amaru to become an international platform, connecting communities and opening doors so that more artists of our generation can shine, be seen, and make a living from their art.
Do you have any routine or ritual before starting a creative project?
Honestly, I don't have any routine or ritual. I just dive in, letting ideas and emotions guide me, trusting that the process will take me where I need to go.
What upcoming projects are you excited about? Is there anything you can share that you're particularly thrilled about?
I can’t reveal much yet, but there are many beautiful things coming—things that excite me deeply. I’m in a moment of intense creation and growth, so soon there will be news.
What exhausts you about this world, and what lifts you up?
Injustice.

Awol Erizku Merges Spirit, Style and Symbol into Art
+ CULTURE & ART
Awol Erizku reinvents Black identity through Afro-esoteric visual language.
His latest work fuses history, mysticism, and urban aesthetics.
In a saturated visual world, Erizku offers depth and soul.

Stepping into Awol Erizku’s visual universe feels like entering an expanding ritual. His work isn’t meant to be merely seen — it’s meant to be invoked. Based in Los Angeles, the multidisciplinary artist has become one of the most visionary voices of his generation, reshaping how Black identity is viewed, perceived, and felt in contemporary art. His self-coined approach, “Afro-esotericism,” blends ancient symbolism, urban culture, and spiritual depth into a language that vibrates beyond gallery walls.
His most recent exhibition, “X”, shown at the Sean Kelly Gallery and the California African American Museum, reads as a visual manifesto on Malcolm X. But beyond homage, Erizku asks uncomfortable questions: What do we do with icons once absorbed by the mainstream? How can we reinfuse them with radical energy? His answers aren’t literal — they’re symbolic, crafted through unexpected materials, luminous installations, charged objects, and immersive soundscapes. Everything in his work feels ceremonial.
What makes Erizku particularly compelling is how he fuses the spiritual with the aesthetic without falling into cliché. His studio —a minimalist cave infused with incense, open books, and drifting hip-hop samples— feels more like a sanctuary than a workspace. “I’m not just producing images. I’m constructing a language that invokes and resists at once,” he explains.
One of his most talked-about works is his reimagining of Nefertiti: the classic bust transformed into a disco ball. Sacred and pop collide boldly. “A lot of these symbols were co-opted, stripped of meaning. I want to give them their power back,” he says. Under his gaze, Afro aesthetics aren’t a trend — they’re a form of resistance. A living memory.
In a world overloaded with imagery, where algorithms determine what we see before we even want it, Erizku’s art slows things down. It demands to be processed, felt, and witnessed. Amidst the rise of AI-generated content, his work feels more human than ever. “Oversaturation will bring us back to the handmade. People are searching for soul, even if they don’t know it yet,” he notes.
And he’s right. There’s something deeply tactile about his art. As if each piece carries fingerprints. As if every sculpture, photograph, or installation whispers something old, aches with the present, and looks fiercely forward. The influence of fashion —and its narrative power through body and image— is also present. His work could live as easily in a museum as in the pages of a high-voltage fashion editorial.
At a time when visuals are fleeting and disposable, Awol Erizku offers something else: symbolic density, uncomfortable beauty, layered truths. His work isn’t designed for likes — it’s made to linger, like a question with no easy answer.
More than an artist, Erizku is a conduit. A voice translating the ancestral into something unapologetically current. His practice isn’t about nostalgia — it’s a future built from the invisible fragments of a past that still burns.

Chatting with CLOE GALASSO
Cloe Galasso, an artist born in vibrant Buenos Aires, is pure creative instinct. Her language is raw material, and her manifesto: hands stained with color. In the midst of contemporary chaos, art is her compass and sanctuary. For Cloe, creating isn’t just a passion — it’s a way of being alive.
+ INTREVIEW
What’s the first thing that appears when you begin a work: an image, an emotion, or an energy?
I think the starting point varies depending on the piece. Sometimes the image comes first, almost like a sudden vision, and it usually carries a very clear emotion, as if that feeling needs to take shape. Other times, the trigger is a more subtle sensation: the energy I perceive in a space, a situation, or even a fleeting moment. It’s as if something vibrates in the air and pushes me to translate it visually. In both cases, what guides the process is a deep connection with the intangible, with that force you feel before you can name it.
Your figures seem suspended in an in-between space. What role does emptiness play in your work?
For me, emptiness is an active space, not an absence. In my work, emptiness isn’t just the background or what surrounds the figures — it’s a presence in itself, a vibrational field where anything can emerge.
I work a lot with the idea of the “in-between,” that intermediate space where forms are not fully defined but are already loaded with intention. I’m drawn to that moment before a final form, where there’s still mystery, possibility, openness. It’s a fertile space where the invisible begins to take shape.
That “emptiness” also resonates deeply with Eastern philosophies, where emptiness isn’t a void, but a container of potential energy. I like to think of my figures as floating or suspended there — not because they’re lost, but because they’re in transition, connected to something more subtle.
What did you discover about yourself in moving from design and ceramics to oil painting?
I discovered that everything we do eventually becomes a tool for what comes next. Having worked in design and ceramics gave me a strong foundation — not just technically, but in terms of visual thinking and sensitivity. Switching to oil painting felt like opening a new door, but carrying a suitcase full of past experiences that allowed me to move more freely. I realized that being multidisciplinary doesn’t just make you more versatile; it also trains you to solve problems, adapt, and flow through the challenges of the creative process. Everything leaves a mark, and in some way, everything connects.
What role does the spiritual — not as dogma, but as vibration — play in your work?
Since I began exploring energy — especially the concept of “Qi” in Chinese tradition — my artistic practice has become a channel to tune into those subtle forces, not as dogma, but as vibrations that run through all things.
To me, spirituality isn’t a series of abstract ideas: it’s a physical, almost sensory experience. When I’m in the studio, I close my eyes and hold a piece of clay — I’m not thinking of preconceived shapes. I let the feeling of energy manifest through my hands, and from there, a figure emerges — one that later repeats and comes to life in my work.
Do you want your works to be understood or felt?
Honestly, I care about both. I’m deeply moved when someone stands in front of a piece and, without needing any explanation, connects with its meaning through observation and emotion. It’s a very special moment when someone approaches and asks if what they felt is what I wanted to express — because that’s when I know the work spoke for itself. Ideally, I want the piece to be felt first and then, if desired, understood. Art has that unique ability to bypass the rational and touch something deeper.
What’s it like to begin monetizing your work as an emerging artist? Is that an important part of thinking about art?
Starting to monetize your work isn’t easy, and in my opinion, it depends a lot on where you're based and how the local market works. For me, the first and maybe most important step was treating being an artist as seriously as any other job. That means applying discipline and devoting a set number of hours per day not just to making art, but to all the other tasks that are part of developing an artistic career.
We often want to just be creating in the studio — at least I do — but there are other things to do that play a key role in monetization, and they’re not always the most enjoyable tasks for an artist.
What have you learned from showing your work in such different places as Buenos Aires, New York, and London?
I’m very grateful to have had the chance to show my work in such diverse cities. Each place has its own energy, its own way of looking — and that has enriched me immensely. Seeing how people from different cultures relate to my work, how they interpret it through their own references and sensitivities, really opened my eyes. It helped me understand that the artwork lives on beyond me. It’s a constant exchange: I bring something of myself to those places, and at the same time, each place transforms me.
What has been your biggest challenge as a young artist in a city like New York?
I think the biggest challenge has been balancing the city’s fast pace with my work and staying focused on my personal goals. New York is full of events — especially art-related ones — throughout the year. There’s so much activity, inspiration, and opportunity, but all of that can also be distracting. At the same time, that’s what makes the city so valuable — you’re constantly bumping into inspiration, people, or conversations that fuel your creativity. It’s a double-edged sword, and you have to know how to handle it so you don’t get lost in the noise.
When have you felt fear in your creative journey, and how did you overcome it?
I felt a lot of fear when I moved to New York. The city seemed huge, overwhelming, and I was in a moment of deep uncertainty: I wasn’t even sure if I really wanted to continue down the path of art, which I had only just begun a year before arriving. But luckily, the path began to reveal itself little by little. The signs started to show up, small doors began to open, and with each step I understood that I was going in the right direction. For me, the key was to surrender fully to the work — with effort, consistency, and commitment — until things slowly began to align with my purpose.
Was it hard for you to recognize yourself as an artist? Was there a turning point when you said: “this is what I’m meant to do”?
At first it was hard, especially because I wasn’t even sure I could call myself an “artist.” That doubt came from personal insecurity, fueled by the elitism that often surrounds the art world. For a long time, I felt that the title didn’t belong to me. But over time, I understood something fundamental: we’re all artists in potential, and what truly defines the role is dedication, discipline, and commitment to what we do.
I always knew I wanted to work in something art-related, but when I studied graphic design, I felt something was missing — like I hadn’t quite found my place. The day I painted with oil for the first time, I felt it with total clarity: this is it. That’s when everything started to make sense.
What would you say to your 20-year-old self, who was just beginning to paint without knowing what was ahead?
Well, I started painting at 24, so I’d tell my 20-year-old self to start as soon as possible. To dare to play, to experiment, to enjoy without fear. I’d tell her to read a lot about art history, to get lost in museums, to go to every exhibition she can. To immerse herself in painting like diving into a freezing pool on the hottest day of the year: fully, without overthinking, with passion and excitement. Because art doesn’t wait — but it always rewards those who leap.

Eileen Kelly Redefines Healing Through Honesty, Sex, and Storytelling
+ CULTURE & ART
Eileen Kelly merges sex education, mental health, and pop culture into a fearless voice for her generation.
From It-Girl blogger to Going Mental podcast host, she transforms vulnerability into power and connection.
Her work reclaims self-care as a radical, raw, and deeply human act.
With the confessional candor of a diary entry and the aesthetic command of an i-D cover, Eileen Kelly has become a singular voice at the intersection of pop culture, mental health, and emotional truth-telling.
Born in 1995 and raised in New York City, Kelly first surfaced in the public eye as a Tumblr-era It-Girl—sex-positive, unfiltered, and fiercely self-possessed. But her journey from provocateur to powerful mental health advocate has turned her into something far more impactful: a multi-hyphenate cultural force reshaping how we talk about healing, identity, and being human online.
Her first major platform, Killer and a Sweet Thang, was not your average blog—it was a digital rebellion.
Through raw storytelling, candid advice, and a sharp dose of humor, Kelly deconstructed everything conventional sex ed failed to touch: desire, boundaries, intimacy, gender dynamics. With a voice that was as relatable as it was radical, she created a safe space for a new generation of readers—girls, boys, and nonbinary folks—seeking clarity in a world of noise. But breaking taboos comes with a cost. Fame, criticism, and the emotional labor of being seen—and often misunderstood—began to take its toll.
By 2014, the pressures of hyper-visibility and performative wellness caught up with her. In a courageous move, Kelly checked herself into McLean Hospital, one of the most respected psychiatric facilities in the U.S. That decision, born from necessity, became the catalyst for a deeper, more authentic evolution—one that would form the backbone of her next act.
Going Mental, Kelly’s critically acclaimed podcast, is both personal catharsis and cultural critique. It’s not just about wellness—it’s about survival. Week after week, she invites public figures and professionals into radically honest dialogues. Her guest list reads like a who’s who of public reckoning: Amanda Knox on shame, Bella Thorne on emotional freedom, Madison Beer on fame and fragility, Dr. Igor Galynker on suicide prevention, Deja Foxx on reproductive justice. The format is intimate but cutting, soft-spoken yet unapologetically fierce.
What sets Eileen apart isn’t just what she talks about—it’s how she does it. Her tone is clear, direct, often poetic, and never performative. There’s no spiritual bypassing here, no pastel-wrapped clichés. Instead, Kelly exposes the false glamor of internet self-care culture and insists on something far more meaningful: emotional intelligence, community, and radical empathy. In doing so, she reclaims mental health from influencer aesthetics and places it back where it belongs—within the complexity of lived experience.
Think of Eileen as a character from an Ottessa Moshfegh novel, but real: disillusioned with polish, honest to the bone, and unwilling to let pain silence her. Her story resonates because she doesn’t mask her contradictions. She embraces them—transforming chaos into connection and vulnerability into visibility.
Now, more than ever, Eileen Kelly is proof that storytelling is activism. Through Going Mental, her writing, and her magnetic digital presence, she reminds us that healing isn’t linear or pretty—but it is powerful. Her narrative dares us to sit with discomfort, feel the hard things, and speak them out loud.
Because in a world of noise, her truth rings out like a bell—clear, fearless, and necessary.

Chatting with MABS KHAKWANI
Mabs Khakwani transforms makeup into visual storytelling—bold, artistic, and deeply emotional. Moving between Dubai and Paris, she blends tradition and modernity with a clean, sophisticated aesthetic. She has collaborated with Dior, Chanel, and Bvlgari, always leaving her unique creative mark. Inspired by classic cinema, culture, and everyday moments, her work goes far beyond the surface. For Mabs, makeup is art, language, and freedom.
+ INTREVIEW
Your work has a very artistic and texture-rich visual identity. How would you define your style as a makeup artist, and what influences have shaped that aesthetic?
I see makeup as a medium not only to divulge in my creative world of textures, hues and imagery, but also to have that poignant human connection with my clients. I would define myself as a rather fearless, unconventional storyteller. To me, my work as an artist must bring forth the inner child of passion, colour and freedom which is reflective of my work. My culture, tradition and childhood have played a huge role in shaping this aesthetic.
You have collaborated with brands like Dior, Chanel, and Bvlgari. What was your first approach to these major fashion houses, and what did you learn from those experiences?
I’ve had the privilege and honour to work with these amazing brands and teams like Dior, Chanel and Bvlgari mostly through publications that have highlighted either their newest beauty launches and products or jewellery. I would say my learning experience would be taking in and understanding the brand’s aesthetic and somehow giving my personal creative touch while highlighting the product in a very subtle or emphatic manner depending on the client’s needs.
What was the moment or project that felt like a true turning point in your career?
I would say the Boucheron Campaign that I did back in 2022.
Your work between Dubai and Paris, two very different fashion scenes. How does that cultural duality reflect in your creative process?
I rather not be identified by a “certain” culture or geographical disposition in terms of my work. Even though the fashion scenes and mindset are significantly different, in some ways I endeavour to create a good balance keeping in mind the rich tradition of United Arab Emirates through my work in the beauty industry.
What challenges have you faced as an artist in such a competitive industry, especially as a Pakistani woman navigating the international fashion world?
Unfortunately, the challenges have been very much prevalent throughout my makeup career, even till date… especially living in this part of the world where there is limited access to working with a diverse number of photographers, models, stylists, at times one finds oneself entwined in a creatively frustrating web.
You’ve worked on award-winning fashion films and conceptual editorials. What differences do you find between doing makeup for the camera versus the runway?
In my opinion, all genres of makeup stem from good skin and hydration. The prep is vital in doing all sorts of makeup. However, the Runway Makeup versus Camera or Film differs in various ways such as lighting, direction, application of makeup, brands, etc… so alignment is key in creating a visual story and delivering an aesthetic of the brand. For example, in Runway the lighting is harsh, hence makeup artists are required to emphasise a clean, balanced skin tone with subtle highlights and shadows. The makeup needs to look flawless from all angles even under intense lighting, versus in Camera or Film the matte foundations and powders are applied to combat shine. Warm natural tones are favoured over cooler and brighter tones as they tend to look more realistic on camera.
What are some of the most common mistakes you see in editorial makeup, and how do you avoid them in your own work?
Working against the aesthetics of the brand or the mood board, and creating a look that is too polished or refined and not reflective of the brand’s / client’s identity. I try to avoid such mistakes by having a detailed discussion with the creative director prior to the shoot in order to be aligned with their requirements for the specific project.
How important is storytelling and narrative in the way you create makeup looks for shoots or campaigns?
Storytelling is pivotal in creating a certain makeup look for a campaign or shoot. The narrative has to be cohesive. Multiple ideas or makeup looks can be extremely chaotic and can lead to total disarray.
Do you have any creative rituals before diving into a new project or editorial session?
I like to meditate followed by a rigorous workout before I dive into my creative realm of self-discovery. This ritual really helps me focus on my work.
What dreams or goals would you like to achieve in the coming years? Is there a brand, city, or person you dream of collaborating with?
Well, my goal in the coming years would be to work internationally with amazing, talented artists and to have an international presence. I would love to collaborate with the amazing photographer Zhong Lin whose amalgamation of art and fashion sets her a world apart in this field.
What inspires you outside the world of makeup? Are there any forms of art, music or film that feed your creative vision?
I’m inspired every single moment in my life! Whether it be my travels to a Moroccan rug shop or a Pakistani wedding where the colours and textures play a visual delight to the senses. Sometimes the mere simplicity and art of being served at a Japanese restaurant helps my mind conjure a new world of makeup ideas and how to implement them in a unique and different manner.
The movie Roman Holiday and Audrey Hepburn uniquely feed my creative vision. Audrey’s flawless skin and doe eyes is my forever favourite makeup look.
In such a demanding industry, how do you take care of your mental health and stay grounded as both an artist and a person?
I have a simple rule of staying focused and grounded.
Mind your own business
Perseverance.
If you have these two traits nothing affects you or deters you from your progressive mindset in achieving anything you want in life.
If your makeup kit could talk… what wild or unexpected story would it tell from a backstage or editorial experience?
Haha… that’s a fun question!
When I was sent on my first job as a makeup artist I thought my heart would pop out of my chest as I was so nervous and anxious… however, as I reached the client I made her feel so calm and came across as so confident in my demeanour that she really thought I had been doing makeup in the industry for long!
For me, that was wild!

Step Inside the Whimsical World of Wes Anderson’s Cinema
+ CULTURE & ART
The Cinémathèque française hosts a dazzling exhibition exploring Wes Anderson’s iconic visual universe. Featuring props, costumes, and personal archives, it unveils the filmmaker’s obsessive craft and inspirations. A must-see for cinephiles and lovers of detail-driven storytelling.
Step into a world where every frame is a painting, every prop has a purpose, and symmetry reigns supreme. From March 19 to July 27, 2025, the Cinémathèque française in Paris opens its doors to a dreamscape exhibition that dives headfirst into the meticulously constructed universe of one of cinema’s most distinctive voices: Wes Anderson.
This isn’t your average retrospective. It’s an immersive voyage through Anderson’s pastel-toned multiverse — a deep dive into the mind of the Texan filmmaker whose style is instantly recognizable and endlessly imitated, but never quite replicated. The exhibition offers unprecedented access to Anderson’s personal archives, showcasing original props, costumes, set designs, storyboards, and annotated scripts that trace the evolution of his singular cinematic language from the '90s to now.
Organized like one of Anderson’s own films — layered, detailed, and visually precise — the show invites visitors to wander through miniature sets, gaze into curated dioramas, and quite literally walk through the lens of his imagination. Think of it as stepping inside a storyboard, where Margot Tenenbaum’s fur coat hangs nearby, a Scout tent from Moonrise Kingdom flaps gently in an artificial breeze, and the fox-sized corduroy suits from Fantastic Mr. Fox seem ready for stop-motion action.
But this is more than nostalgia or costume play — it’s a study in obsession, design, and emotional storytelling. Each room highlights how Anderson’s seemingly whimsical visual choices are tightly woven into character psychology, narrative rhythm, and thematic weight. From The Royal Tenenbaums' dysfunctional poetry to the geopolitical chaos of The Grand Budapest Hotel, the exhibit illustrates how Anderson’s films are pop-cultural fairy tales laced with melancholy and sharp wit.
At the heart of the exhibition is a celebration of craftsmanship. Visitors can observe the tactile magic behind the scenes — handcrafted models, intricate set pieces, vintage typewriters, custom fonts, and painstakingly labeled suitcases. Anderson’s world is one where nothing is accidental, and this show revels in that truth. His obsession with analog detail in a digital age feels not just artistic, but revolutionary.
Also on display are his inspirations: classic French New Wave cinema, the deadpan rigor of Buster Keaton, mid-century European art, and the golden age of American illustration. Rare clips and curated screenings at the Cinémathèque’s own theatre add depth to the experience, contextualizing Anderson not as an outlier, but as part of a long lineage of visual storytellers.
In a cultural landscape that often rewards speed over substance, Anderson’s slow cinema and handmade worlds are more relevant than ever. This exhibition doesn’t just honor a filmmaker; it spotlights a vision — one that reminds us that storytelling, at its best, is both deeply personal and meticulously composed.
So if you’ve ever dreamed of living inside a Wes Anderson film — now’s your chance. Pack your khaki shorts, dig out that vintage Polaroid, and head to the Cinémathèque française for a rare glimpse into cinema’s most delightfully controlled chaos.

Her passion for set design began with immersive theatre and visual art experiences, deeply influenced by artists like Naomi Okubo. She embraces mistakes as part of the creative process, maintaining a clear and emotionally resonant visual identity. Through personal projects like miniatures and painting, she aims to preserve fleeting ideas and evoke powerful first impressions.
+ INTREVIEW

What was the first image or feeling that made you think, “this is what I want to do”?
I was first introduced to the world of set design through musical theatre. I’m originally from a small town, but one summer, my family had the opportunity to live in New York. I think we saw a different musical every week. One experience that particularly stayed with me was an immersive exhibition at the Fashion Institute of Technology — CFDA Celebrates 50 Years of Fashion. The scale and beauty of these productions left a deep impression on me.
I’ve always found inspiration through the world of painting. When I studied painting at around age 14, I stumbled upon the work of Japanese artists called Naomi Okubo, she paints these elaborate, highly detailed pattern-filled spaces with mysterious figures. Her paintings are full of patterns and often depict focus on the space around her subject. Looking at my career path, and my love for her paintings, I can see how the two connect.
A creative’s identity is essential when it comes to being considered for projects, and success in the industry often depends on it.
How did you arrive at your own identity, and how do you maintain it over time?
I’m definitely still in the process of discovering my creative identity — I don’t think I’ve fully found it and that’s okay. Sometimes, when you’re unsure of exactly who or what you are creatively, you’ll learn what you’re not. For example, I know I’m naturally drawn to colour, texture, and richness. If someone is looking for a minimalist aesthetic, it’s simply not how my creative brain works — that’s not the kind of projects I take on.
It’s also important to consistently curate your work and communicate your ideas clearly. Especially in fast-paced environments, it’s easy to rely on long presentations or throw in too many references, but I believe clarity is key. The more focused the message, the stronger the work comes across.
Maintaining a strong visual identity online is another way I stay aligned with my creative direction. I treat digital presence with the same care I would give a brand — ensuring my website, logo, social content, and imagery all feel cohesive and intentional. Social media has played a huge role in building my network and generating work opportunities. While I don’t create content in the same way an influencer might, I still approach it strategically, with a clear understanding of how I want my work to be seen and understood.
What role does error play in your creative process?
Error is a big part of my creative process — whether I like it or not! Honestly, some of my favourite ideas have come from things not going to plan. A material behaves differently than expected, a reference takes me somewhere unexpected, or a last-minute change forces me to rethink everything. It can be frustrating in the moment, but those “mistakes” often push me to be more creative.
Especially in set design, nothing ever goes exactly as imagined — there are so many moving parts. I’ve learned not to panic when something goes wrong, but to treat it as part of the process. Sometimes those little errors lead to something way more interesting or human than what I had in mind in the first place.
We live in a world saturated with images. How do you make sure yours breathe—and how do you avoid burnout when seeking inspiration?
Sometimes I seek inspiration outside of social media and often turn to books when I have the time. Researching online can be exhausting — it feels endless, and it’s so easy to get distracted with other links. With books, you can focus entirely on one thing without the noise. I also visit exhibitions and shows as often as I can. I take photos or collect images from these experiences and slowly build a catalogue of references based on things I’ve actually seen in real life. It feels more meaningful and grounded to work from real-life encounters rather than just scrolling through content online.
Is there any emotion or concept you’re currently exploring? Something new that’s drawing you in?
One personal project I have in mind is turning some of the concepts that come out of the stage design process — or even the final designs themselves — into paintings. As much as I love working on live events, they’re temporary by nature. We put so much effort into refining and perfecting the design, but often some of the original ideas get lost along the way. Plus, the final outcome is usually only seen by a limited audience, and it exists for just a brief moment. I’m trying to find a way to preserve that work and give it a new life.
Another personal project I’d love to pursue is a Walter Wick-style photoshoot, creating imaginary worlds using miniature models. I’ve always loved the art of miniature making — I learned the craft at university but haven’t had the time to explore it in depth due to tight schedules. I find miniatures so beautiful and fun to make, and it feels like a dying art form. It’s also a great solution for a personal project, as you can build quite elaborate scenes with very little material waste.
What influences or figures inspire and fulfill you?
When I was starting out, I looked into Es Devlin’s work a lot — I think I listened to pretty much every talk she’s ever given. I was really drawn to the way she thinks about space and performance. More recently, I’ve been following David Stark. I came across his book in the library and was immediately hooked. He’s an event designer, and his work is honestly incredible. Some are super fun, really creative, and every little detail feels so thoughtful and clever.
What details do you focus on when starting a project, and what’s your process from concept to delivery?
I’m also always thinking practically from the start: what’s the budget, what are the limitations, and how can we be clever within them?
Once the concept is clear, I usually create a moodboard or visual deck to communicate the idea clearly, and then start sketching or building rough 3D models or mockups. I really like to figure things out by making — whether that’s small physical models or digital ones — it helps me solve problems early on.
From there, it’s a lot of refining: working closely with fabricators, making sure the design is buildable, and always thinking about how it will work in the real world — especially if it’s a touring show or temporary installation. On delivery days, I like to be really hands-on. There’s always something that changes last minute, and I try to stay flexible while making sure the final result still feels true to the original idea.
Do you constantly feel the need to reinvent yourself?
I don’t feel the need to constantly reinvent myself — every job I do is already so incredibly different from the last that the circumstances kind of do it for me. As a set designer, you end up being a bit of a jack of all trades. You’re constantly shifting between styles, formats, teams, and techniques, so reinvention sort of happens naturally. I might not be a master of one specific discipline, but I think that ability to adapt is actually a strength in this field.
What would you like someone to feel or think when they encounter your work for the first time?
Honestly? I want them to gasp — like, uncontrollably. I want that instant, emotional reaction where someone sees the scene and goes, “wow!”
Where helps you escape distraction from the noise of the world? Any book you’d recommend?
I enjoy working — it’s the one thing that properly shuts out all the noise. But I’ve realised there’s a difference between feeling relaxed and actually relaxing. For me, relaxing is more like painting or sketching with a really good playlist on in the background.

Troy Lamarr Chew II: Painting the Invisible, Reimagining Black Power in Contemporary Art
+ CULTURE & ART
Troy Lamarr Chew II is an American painter born in 1992 in Los Angeles, where he currently lives and works. His work centers on exploring the legacy of the African diaspora and its impact on contemporary American culture. He employs traditional European painting techniques to reinterpret and question the historical exclusion of Blackness from Western art.
Chew is known for series such as Out the Mud, Slanguage, and Three Crowns, where he blends elements of classical art with references to African American culture and hip-hop. For example, in Slanguage, he creates still lifes in the style of Flemish painting, incorporating everyday objects encoded with hip-hop slang—establishing parallels between historical and contemporary visual languages.
In 2020, he was awarded the prestigious Tournesol Residency at the Headlands Center for the Arts. His work has been exhibited at galleries such as Altman Siegel in San Francisco and Parker Gallery in Los Angeles, and is part of institutional collections including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) and the Kadist Foundation.
Chew has also integrated technology into his practice. In the exhibition The Roof is on Fire, visitors could use an app to view animations of dance movements projected over his paintings, merging traditional art with interactive digital experiences.

Troy Lamarr Chew II is an African American visual artist whose work boldly challenges the Eurocentric narratives historically embedded in academic art. Rooted in the traditions of classical European painting, Chew’s practice redefines that legacy by fusing it with contemporary symbols of Black identity. He incorporates elements such as hip-hop culture, street language, and urban fashion to build a new “visual language” that foregrounds African American experience. His paintings operate as both homage and critique—honoring the technical mastery of old-world painting while confronting its exclusionary gaze.
In his second solo exhibition at Altman Siegel Gallery in San Francisco, on view through December 21, 2024, Chew deepens his exploration of visibility and representation. Titled Brings the Invisible Into Focus, the show presents a suite of hyperrealistic portraits that render Black individuals as physically “invisible.”
The skin of each subject—friends and family members integral to Chew’s life—is replaced by a reflective distortion of their surroundings. This artistic device serves not as erasure, but as a strategy to highlight how these individuals often go unseen or unrecognized in broader cultural narratives.
The inspiration for the series stemmed from Chew’s time working as a driver in San Francisco. There, he observed firsthand the social invisibility experienced by working-class Black individuals. Rather than portraying invisibility as a void, Chew reclaims it as a form of silent power and sharp observational insight. Through this lens, invisibility becomes a superpower—allowing one to move through space with autonomy and awareness.
The exhibition becomes a tribute to the “village” that sustains him—his mother, local artisans, curators, and collectors—all heroes in their own right, worthy of being seen and honored.
Chew’s past exhibitions reflect his ongoing commitment to redefining Black presence in visual culture. In Slanguage (2021, Altman Siegel), he created still lifes inspired by 17th-century Flemish painting, filled with objects encoded in hip-hop slang.

These works drew direct parallels between historical and contemporary forms of visual and linguistic expression. By imbuing traditional formats with African American semiotics, Chew questioned whose culture gets preserved and celebrated in art history.
His 2022 exhibition The Roof is on Fire at Parker Gallery in Los Angeles integrated augmented reality. Viewers could use an app to see animated dancers overlaid on his canvases—merging digital innovation with classical oil painting. The result was an interactive homage to rhythm, movement, and joy within Black culture.
Earlier projects like Out the Mud (2019) captured the resilience of his community through hyperreal portraits of people overcoming hardship, while Three Crowns (2020), developed during his Tournesol Residency, reimagined historical Black figures with regal iconography drawn from both European and hip-hop traditions. These series investigate the politics of power, legacy, and representation.
Across his body of work, Chew is building a rich, multilayered language that not only asserts Black presence in spaces of fine art but demands that it be seen, understood, and valued on its own terms.

Mexican music superstar Carín León kicks off 2025 with the release of his highly anticipated extended album, Palabra de To’s (Seca), available now on all digital platforms.
This new edition expands on the critically acclaimed Palabra de To’s, originally released in December 2024, and brings four brand-new tracks to fans around the world, including two standout collaborations with Latin icons Maluma and Alejandro Fernández.
The album was originally recorded live in Hermosillo, Sonora, and Palabra de To’s (Seca) deepens its emotional and musical impact with fresh material. Leading the new tracks is the heartbreak-infused ballad “Si Tú Me Vieras,” a second collaboration between León and Maluma, following their previous success. The song was first unveiled during Maluma’s emotional homecoming concert, “Medallo en el Mapa 2.0,” in Medellín.
Maluma expressed his excitement about reuniting with León, saying, “It’s a joy to work again with my brother Carín on what I know will be a very special song. Colombia and Mexico making history together once again!”
Another highlight of the extended album is “Me Está Doliendo,” a powerful ranchera ballad featuring Alejandro Fernández. The track explores the raw vulnerability of heartbreak and the struggle between pride and pain—a classic theme in Mexican music, elevated by the emotional delivery of both titans of the genre.
The extended album also includes “Tres Pesos” and “Por La Suave,” the latter of which was premiered during Carín León’s recent NPR Tiny Desk Concert. The performance went viral, garnering over 13 million views within just three days. During the session, León reflected on the importance of “Primera Cita”, calling it the song that changed his life and introduced a wider audience to his musical identity. He then introduced “Por La Suave”, penned by the same songwriter, Alejandro Lozano, honoring the poetry and emotion of his Hermosillo roots.
With Palabra de To’s (Seca), Carín León further cements his reputation as a global ambassador of Mexican music. The project features the work of 28 acclaimed composers, predominantly Mexican, under the musical direction and curation of Latin GRAMMY-winning producer Edgar Barrera.
In parallel with the album release, Carín León has announced the “Boca Chueca Tour 2025,” which includes a series of major dates across Europe. In Spain, fans can look forward to unforgettable performances on July 5 in Gran Canaria (Granca Live Fest), July 10 in Seville (Icónica Fest), July 11 in Madrid (Movistar Arena), and July 13 in Valencia (Estadi Ciutat de València).
The tour follows a landmark year for León in 2024, during which he made history with his shows in Madrid. In 2025, his European tour will expand to include performances in Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, the UK, Switzerland, and France, including a highlight stop at the legendary Bataclan in Paris.
With this new release and tour, Carín León is poised to continue redefining Mexican music on the world stage—fusing tradition, innovation, and star power.

These dual exposures to the operatic and the contemporary played a crucial role in shaping Schub’s creative voice.
From an early age, it was clear that Schub had a gift for music, though he credits his family and environment for nurturing this talent. His mother, in particular, acted as a guide, much like the fictional character Mr. Schneebly from School of Rock, steering him away from classical rigidity and toward the dynamic world of rock and pop. These formative experiences gave Schub not only a broad appreciation for music but also a deep understanding of its emotional and performative elements.
Schub’s musical influences are as diverse as his upbringing. He cites Glen Hansard as a grounding force, whose records he turns to for solace and inspiration. Schub’s playlists are a reflection of his admiration for artists known for their emotional depth and authenticity, such as Hozier, Florence + The Machine, Jeff Buckley, Alabama Shakes, Adele, and Michael Kiwanuka. This rich tapestry of influences informs Schub’s sound, which is both cinematic and intimate.
Notably, growing up in Germany and later moving to London gave Schub a unique perspective on songwriting and lyrical composition. English, his second language, initially posed a challenge, but it also allowed him to approach lyrics with meticulous care. This dual cultural lens enriched his understanding of how music resonates across linguistic and cultural boundaries, emphasizing the importance of tone, energy, and sound over strict lyrical precision.
Rather than following the more conventional routes to fame, Schub chose a grassroots approach, focusing on busking and open mics. His journey began in London, where he performed in public spaces and grassroots venues, honing his craft and building his confidence as a performer. Schub’s first gigs were at Spiritual Bar in Camden, where he would sometimes perform four nights a week. These intimate, challenging performances taught him the importance of earning an audience’s attention—a lesson that continues to shape his approach to live shows.
Schub admits that his early performances were far from polished. However, his persistence paid off, and he gradually became a natural on stage. Playing to diverse, often rowdy crowds helped him refine his ability to connect with listeners. This commitment to learning through experience reflects his belief in the power of “diving into the deep end” and embracing the struggles that come with it.
Breakout Success with “Sing Like Madonna”
Schub’s first official release, “Sing Like Madonna,” marked a turning point in his career. The song’s cinematic and cascading sound struck a chord with listeners, amassing significant streaming numbers and critical acclaim. Schub describes the song as one of those rare moments when everything came together perfectly in the songwriting process. Its success validated his artistic approach and set the stage for further exploration of his musical identity.
Interestingly, Schub took his time releasing “Sing Like Madonna,” a decision he acknowledges was nerve-wracking. Despite fears that the delay might diminish interest, the song resonated deeply with audiences, proving that good music can transcend timing. Its success demonstrated Schub’s ability to create songs that are both deeply personal and widely relatable.
A New Chapter with “I Can’t Believe We Never Went Out Dancing”
Schub’s latest single, “I Can’t Believe We Never Went Out Dancing,” showcases a more stripped-back, piano-led sound that highlights his vocal and emotional depth. The song was recorded in Soho’s Dean Street Studios with producers Steve Fitzmaurice and Dave McCracken, emphasizing a raw, undiluted performance. Schub’s decision to keep the production minimal reflects his desire to let the song’s natural imperfections shine, adding to its authenticity and emotional impact.
Thematically, the track explores the regret of missed opportunities and the bittersweet longing that accompanies such reflections. It’s a song about the kind of “what-ifs” that keep you awake at night—a sentiment that resonates universally. Schub’s ability to capture such complex emotions in a simple yet powerful way underscores his talent as a songwriter.
Schub’s live performances are an extension of his authentic and unpretentious approach to music. Known for his engaging stage presence and candid interactions, he creates an intimate atmosphere that allows audiences to connect with him on a personal level. Schub values the magic of small, intimate shows, where the connection between artist and audience is palpable.
While Schub acknowledges that he is not a natural performer, he has worked hard to develop his stagecraft. Early performances in grassroots venues in London and Dublin provided invaluable experience, teaching him how to win over audiences and keep their attention. This commitment to growth and learning has made him a captivating live act, earning him a reputation for heartfelt and memorable performances.
As Schub looks to the future, his plans include releasing more music and continuing to build his live presence. The next year promises to be eventful, with new songs that explore a range of sonic and thematic territories. Schub’s commitment to his craft, coupled with his ability to connect with audiences on a deeply emotional level, suggests that his rise in the music world is only just beginning.
In a time when many artists are vying for attention in an oversaturated market, Sebastian Schub’s focus on authenticity and grassroots growth sets him apart. His journey from Hamburg to London, from busking on the streets to releasing widely acclaimed singles, is a testament to the power of perseverance and passion. With his evocative songwriting and compelling performances, Schub is poised to become a defining voice in contemporary music. Whether through intimate live shows or the release of deeply personal tracks, he continues to capture the hearts of fans and carve out his place in the industry.

Megan Thee Stallion and Flo Milli Shine in Bold, Horror-Themed “Roc Steady”
Megan Thee Stallion and Flo Milli deliver fierce energy in the Jennifer’s Body-inspired "Roc Steady" video. The track, blending horror aesthetics and sharp lyrics, is a standout from Megan's Act II album. Their collaboration redefines creativity in hip-hop with style and confidence.
Megan Thee Stallion and Flo Milli have captured the attention of the music world with their electrifying collaboration, "Roc Steady." A visual and auditory feast, the music video is a bold fusion of horror themes, cheerleading aesthetics, and commanding rap performances, firmly establishing itself as a standout in Megan’s Act II project. Set at the fictional Roc Steady High School, the storyline unfolds in a universe steeped in chaos and mystery. Headlines about student murders and unexplained bite marks provide a sinister backdrop as the two artists revel in their duality—bright, polished cheerleaders by day and lethal, bloodthirsty predators by night. The aesthetic is a clear nod to the 2009 cult classic film Jennifer’s Body, a movie celebrated for its fusion of feminine power and dark humor. Megan and Flo Milli embody this energy effortlessly, creating a music video that feels as much like a short film as a promotional visual.
The transformation of Megan and Flo Milli throughout the video is as striking as it is symbolic. Dressed in bright pink cheerleading uniforms, the pair exudes an almost saccharine sweetness before the darker, more menacing undertones of the video come to life. Their confidence radiates in every frame, with moments that flip traditional femininity on its head, using it as a weapon rather than a shield. Their victims—a series of hapless men—fall prey to the pair’s predatory prowess, leaving a trail of bloody chaos behind them. This juxtaposition of hyper-femininity and raw power is a recurring theme in Megan’s artistry and is brought to life with thrilling effect in this video.
Musically, "Roc Steady" is an irresistible blend of nostalgia and modern swagger. Sampling Ciara’s early 2000s hit “Goodies,” the track strikes a balance between homage and innovation. Megan’s verses are razor-sharp and unapologetically bold, delivering lines like, “Ain’t outdressin’ me on the top of a salad,” with a mix of wit and authority. Flo Milli complements this energy perfectly with her animated and playful delivery, making the track a dynamic interplay of their distinct styles. Together, their chemistry elevates "Roc Steady" into an anthem that is equal parts empowering and provocative.
The video’s release marks the second from Megan’s Act II deluxe album, a project that exemplifies her evolution as an artist. The 13-track album is a rich tapestry of influences, featuring collaborations with global heavyweights like BTS’ RM and K-pop group TWICE, alongside a mix of freestyles and tracks that highlight Megan’s lyrical dexterity. The album showcases Megan’s ability to adapt to different styles and genres, further cementing her status as one of hip-hop’s most versatile stars. From hard-hitting tracks to more playful and experimental songs, Act II is a testament to Megan’s ambition and artistry.
While Megan commands the spotlight with her unmatched charisma, Flo Milli’s contributions to "Roc Steady" and her personal journey add layers of relatability and intrigue to the project. The Alabama-born rapper has made waves in the industry with her vibrant personality and sharp lyrical skills, and her chemistry with Megan in the video is undeniable. Flo Milli recently confirmed her pregnancy in a candid and humorous social media post, a revelation that delighted her fans and added a personal dimension to her growing public persona. The news didn’t overshadow her performance but rather enhanced it, reflecting her resilience and ability to balance personal milestones with professional achievements.
The success of "Roc Steady" also speaks to the broader cultural impact of Megan and Flo Milli. Both artists have carved out unique spaces in the music industry, challenging norms and redefining what it means to be a female rapper in today’s landscape. Megan, often referred to as the “Hot Girl coach,” has become a symbol of empowerment, using her platform to inspire confidence and self-expression. Flo Milli, with her infectious energy and sharp wit, has quickly risen as one of hip-hop’s most promising talents. Together, their collaboration is a celebration of individuality and creative freedom.
Beyond its musical and visual appeal, "Roc Steady" serves as a reminder of the power of storytelling in music. The video’s cinematic quality, combined with its thematic depth, makes it more than just a promotional tool—it’s an artistic statement. Drawing from horror tropes and subverting traditional gender roles, Megan and Flo Milli create a narrative that is as compelling as it is entertaining. The video resonates not just because of its aesthetic appeal but because it taps into deeper themes of empowerment, revenge, and the reclamation of feminine power.
The release of "Roc Steady" is part of a larger moment in Megan Thee Stallion’s career. Following a string of high-profile collaborations, chart-topping hits, and award wins, Megan continues to push boundaries with her creativity and vision. Her ability to blend humor, grit, and glamour has set her apart as a true innovator in the music industry. Similarly, Flo Milli’s ascent has been marked by a refreshing authenticity and a willingness to take risks, making her a perfect collaborator for a project as bold and ambitious as this one.
As fans and critics alike continue to dissect and celebrate "Roc Steady," the video stands as a testament to the evolving landscape of hip-hop and the role of female artists in shaping its future. Megan Thee Stallion and Flo Milli have not only delivered a standout track but have also created a cultural moment that underscores their artistry and impact. Their partnership is a reminder of the power of collaboration and the magic that can happen when two creative forces come together to challenge expectations and redefine norms.
In a music industry that often emphasizes trends and conformity, Megan and Flo Milli’s "Roc Steady" is a breath of fresh air. It’s a bold, unapologetic statement of who they are as artists and as individuals. The video’s blend of horror-inspired visuals, cheeky humor, and raw power encapsulates everything fans have come to love about these two stars. With Megan’s Act II project continuing to make waves and Flo Milli’s career reaching new heights, "Roc Steady" is not just a highlight—it’s a defining moment in their journeys.

Band Aid Reunites for 40th Anniversary with 2024 Ultimate Mix of Iconic Charity Song
Band Aid commemorates its 40th anniversary with a re-recording of Do They Know It’s Christmas?. The 2024 Ultimate Mix blends original and updated vocals, raising awareness for East African famine relief. Despite its legacy, the project faces criticism for outdated narratives and controversies surrounding its portrayal of Africa.
Band Aid reconnects on its 40th anniversary for the re-recording of Do they know it's Christmas? 2024 Ultimate Mix, the charity song that raised £8 million for famine relief in Ethiopia in 1984, and which has aged as a holiday classic The musical union founded by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure, members of The Boomtown Rats and Ultravox, respectively, returns to celebrate the anniversary of the original release with a new version of Do they know it's Christmas?, released 40 years ago to raise funds to fight hunger in Ethiopia. A great cause that later evolved into Live Aids, considered some of the best minutes in the history of live music, and christening July 13 as World Rock Day.
One of Band Aid’s main charms was the use of the leading British and Irish artists of the day, a proposition that ended up uniting 42 voices, including Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, David Bowie, Paul McCartney, Culture Club, George Michael, Paul Young, Kool and the Gang, Sting, Bono and Adam Clayton, Phil Collins, Paul Weller and Bananarama, among others. 2014 followed a similar dynamic, updating its members to Chris Martin, U2 Bono’s young and older versions, Bastille, Ellie Goulding, Radiohead’s Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood, One Direction… and featuring David Bowie’s voice ending the tune with “It would be wonderful if you could all buy copies of this record”.
However, this new version has evolved the dynamic followed up until now, reconstituting the band as usual, but mixing the voices of the original and 2014’s version. Which has provided a movie-like end result, in which Harry Styles, Robbie Williams, Sam Smith and George Michael sing in unison. AN ONGOING CONTROVERSY 40 YEARS ON In spite of being an undeniable success, Band Aid, and the song Do they know it's Christmas?, was mired in controversy even before its release.
Firstly because of the irony of having some of the world's wealthiest public figures asking for donations from the civilian population, and secondly because of the disdain towards the African population portrayed in the lyrics. The use of phrases such as Where nothing ever grows, no rain or river flows, implied that the African continent was a destructive place with no resources that only singning white men could save.
As a result, the 2014 version changed some of its verses, but continued to be bathed in controversy due to the inclusion of alarming lyrics about Ebola, broadening the stigmatization towards Africa and its population. 2024 was not to be outdone, and the cause has once again been tarnished. However, some of the artists involved have been the ones who have once again echoed the low morality that lies behind the project.
The main one has featured Ed Sheeran, whose voice was used in the 2014 version, and who has been reluctant to appear in the new version, stating that no one has requested his permission for the use of his voice, and that, if they had done so, he would have “politely declined”.
The British singer has admitted that, after 10 years, the narrative does not agree with his stance on the issue, and that he refuses not want to be associated with it. even though the damage is already done, he has kindly asked to be associated with Fuse ODG, a Ghanaian-British musician who has publicly come out against Band Aid, and which whose values he alligns with.
These are also associated with Abiy Ahmed, Prime Minister of Ethiopia’s statements, who claims that, while acknowledging the good intentions of the original 1984 version, finds it “frustrating to see the ancient history, culture, diversity and beauty of our nation reduced to pessimism”.
These accusations have been refuted by Bob Geldof, Band Aid’s founder, recalling that, over the past four decades, Band Aid has earned £150 million to fight famine in East Africa, stating that “this little pop song has kept millions of people alive. Why would Band Aid throw away feeding thousands of children who depend on us for food?”.

Known for his genre-defying sound that blends alternative pop, indie rock, and alternative rap, Cliftun continues to push creative boundaries while reflecting deeply on society and personal experiences. His new track, following the viral success of his breakout single "LANA," solidifies his place as a rising star in the alternative hip-hop scene.
"The Inevitable" is a sonic rollercoaster, featuring a dramatic fusion of frenzied violin strings and driving percussive beats. The track’s instrumental arrangement captures an electrifying energy, perfectly complementing Cliftun’s rapid-fire verses and enigmatic delivery. His ability to balance lyrical sharpness with emotional depth elevates the song into a work of art that transcends musical genres.
A significant aspect of "The Inevitable" is its bold, minimalist visuals. Shot entirely on an iPhone, the music video embraces raw authenticity, foregoing flashy production for monochrome simplicity. This stripped-down approach highlights Cliftun’s intense stage presence and charisma, as he commands attention through his performance alone. The deliberate choice of minimalism reflects Cliftun’s dedication to connecting with his audience on a more intimate, visceral level.
Thematically, "The Inevitable" explores the complex interplay of destiny, self-doubt, and perseverance. Cliftun’s lyrics delve into personal and societal struggles, delivering hard-hitting social commentary with poetic elegance. His ability to weave relatable narratives with an alternative edge speaks to his artistry and sets him apart in a crowded music industry.
The rising artist’s unique style draws comparisons to influential figures like Kid Cudi and Tyler, the Creator, but Cliftun’s distinctive approach ensures he remains in a category of his own. His fusion of genres defies easy classification, blending the rebellious spirit of punk rock with the introspective storytelling of alternative hip-hop. This dynamic combination resonates deeply with fans who crave music that challenges conventions.
Cliftun’s meteoric rise can be traced back to "LANA," a breakout indie pop anthem that gained viral traction and established him as an artist to watch. "LANA" showcased his knack for capturing universal emotions in a way that felt personal and fresh. With "The Inevitable," he builds on this foundation, demonstrating his evolution as an artist unafraid to tackle new sonic territories.
Musically, Cliftun’s growth is evident in the intricate layering of sounds and his fearless experimentation with tempo and tone. "The Inevitable" transitions seamlessly from high-energy verses to moments of introspection, creating a narrative journey within the track. This dynamic structure keeps listeners engaged, offering something new with every listen.
The visuals accompanying "The Inevitable" are a testament to Cliftun’s DIY ethos and creative vision. By choosing to shoot the video on an iPhone, he emphasizes authenticity and relatability over spectacle. The monochrome aesthetic, combined with his magnetic performance, creates an intimate viewing experience that feels both raw and cinematic. This approach aligns with Cliftun’s artistic philosophy, where storytelling and emotion take precedence over polished production.
Cliftun’s artistic journey reflects his commitment to growth and authenticity. His work consistently challenges norms, offering a fresh perspective on contemporary music and culture. "The Inevitable" encapsulates this ethos, serving as both a personal manifesto and a cultural critique. The track’s layered themes and innovative sound underscore his status as a trailblazer in the alternative music scene.
With his rapid ascent, Cliftun is not just a musician; he’s a storyteller and provocateur, redefining what it means to be an artist in today’s landscape. "The Inevitable" is more than just a song; it’s a statement of intent, signaling the arrival of an artist poised to make a lasting impact.

Beyoncé and Charli XCX Lead the 2025 Grammy Nominations in Multiple Categories
The 2025 Grammy nominations spotlight Beyoncé and Charli XCX as top contenders for the 67th Annual Ceremony. Celebrating significant achievements by women and historic nods, the nominees reflect a diverse and competitive year in music.
2025 GRAMMY NOMINATIONS Marking the start of “awards season”, the Grammy nominations have been announced this morning, including Beyoncé and Charli XCX as their main aspirants in the 67th Annual Ceremony. In the midst of the controversies and concerns over the recently revealed election results, new horizons open up for recognition among the music industry in the past year. A livestream broadcasted through the Grammy’s website and Youtube Channel has disclosed this year’s ceremony nominees, who will await for a possible victory and praise from the Record Academy next February 2nd.
The announcers list, revealed last Friday, included most of the 2024 winners, such as Victoria Mónet, who took home three gramophones last February, Paramore’s Hayley Williams, and Kylie Minogue, among others.
One of the main concerns for this edition’s nominations was the fair recognition of women, who have, by far, been this year’s main stage-leaders.
And they did not disappoint. Best New Artist award will be disputed between Benson Boone, Doechii, Khruangbin, RAYE, Shaboozey and Teddy Sweims, among others;
Nevertheless, and according to the participation bases and to their journeys as 2024’s main pop artists, the concluding deliberation should be held between Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter.
Album of the year (AOTY), the most treasured and valued award handed throughout the night, will be disputed between Charli XCX (brat), Chappell Roan (The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess), Sabrina Carpenter (Short n’ Sweet), Beyoncé (Cowboy Carter), Billie Eilish (Hit me Hard and Soft), André 3000 (New Blue Sun), Jacob Collier (Djesse Vol.4) and a classic contestant: Taylor Swift, who has officially become the first woman to earn seven AOTY nominations.
As this specific gramophone recognizes and praises songwriting, it is also one of the most controversial ones to decree, and the final decision often leaves out highly reproduced and pop culture significant albums. Not this year, however, as some of the most streamed and foolproof marketing strategies have officially paid off.
The announcement has revealed some historic upcoming events, including The Beatles’ nomination for Now and Then, the band's last nomination as a group. They will compete for Record Of The Year alongside Beyoncé, who is once again the gala’s most nominated artist, followed by Charli XCX, who will take on seven categories.

The Setlist: A Sonic Journey Through E-40's Discography
E-40 opened his performance with "Choices (Yup)," a 2014 single that quickly became a fan favorite due to its infectious call-and-response structure. The crowd immediately responded to the chant, creating an electric atmosphere that set the tone for the rest of his set. As the audience chanted back the "Yup" and "Nope" in perfect rhythm, E-40's command over the stage was evident. This song, which emphasizes decision-making and personal accountability, was a fitting opener, as it reflects E-40’s philosophy of self-reliance and authenticity, both of which have been central themes throughout his career.
From there, the performance picked up even more energy as E-40 launched into his guest verse from Lil Jon’s 2006 hit "Snap Yo Fingers." The song, a crunk anthem that dominated clubs and airwaves in the mid-2000s, brought a wave of nostalgia to the audience. E-40's collaboration with Lil Jon was a pivotal moment in his career, as it expanded his reach beyond the Bay Area and introduced his distinctive style to a broader national audience. His performance of "Snap Yo Fingers" served as a reminder of the cross-regional impact of his music, blending the crunk sound of the South with his Bay Area swagger.
E-40’s versatility shone through as he transitioned into "I Don’t F**k With You," a breakup anthem by Big Sean, where he delivered his iconic guest verse. This track, released in 2014, was another major hit for E-40, helping solidify his position as an artist who could remain relevant across multiple generations of hip hop fans. The song's brash, unapologetic tone perfectly aligns with E-40's persona, and the crowd’s enthusiastic reaction showed how much fans still appreciate his ability to deliver clever, memorable verses.
To close out his performance, E-40 brought the Bay Area hyphy movement to the forefront with "Tell Me When to Go," one of his most iconic songs. Released in 2006, the track helped define the hyphy era, a period marked by uptempo beats, energetic dance styles, and a rebellious, carefree spirit. The crowd erupted as the familiar opening notes of the song played, and E-40’s energy on stage was palpable as he commanded the audience to get hyped. "Tell Me When to Go" is more than just a party track—it’s a cultural anthem that captures the essence of Bay Area street culture, from the slang to the distinctive dance moves associated with hyphy.
The performance ended on a high note, with the crowd cheering and applauding as E-40 left the stage. His ability to seamlessly blend nostalgia with the raw energy of the hyphy movement was a perfect demonstration of why he continues to be such a beloved figure in the hip hop community. The performance was a celebration not only of his career but also of the Bay Area’s lasting influence on hip hop culture.
E-40’s performance at the BET Hip Hop Awards 2024 was more than just a concert—it was a continuation of the victory lap he’s been on in recent years. At 56, E-40 has not only maintained his relevance in a constantly evolving industry, but he’s also been receiving long-overdue recognition for his contributions to hip hop. His influence goes far beyond his music; as a cultural icon, he has played a pivotal role in shaping the identity of the Bay Area in the national and international consciousness.
One of the most significant moments in recent years came in 2022, when the city of Vallejo, California, honored E-40 by renaming a street after him. "E-40 Way" now stands in place of Magazine Street, the block where the rapper grew up and the setting for many of his songs. This recognition was a testament to the lasting impact E-40 has had on his community and the music world at large. As the rapper reflected on the honor, he shared his gratitude with his fans, writing on Instagram, “Never in my wildest dreams did I ever expect to have my childhood street in Vallejo named after me… Don’t ever give up on your dreams!”
The street renaming was a historic moment, not just for E-40, but for the entire city of Vallejo. It was a tangible symbol of the rapper’s journey from humble beginnings to global stardom, and it immortalized his connection to the city he has always proudly represented. In addition to the street renaming, E-40 was also awarded the key to the city of Vallejo, becoming only the second person in the city’s history to receive this honor. These accolades further cemented his status as a hometown hero and a musical legend.
E-40’s Cultural Impact: Beyond Music
While E-40’s music remains at the heart of his legacy, his influence extends far beyond the studio and stage. Over the years, he has become a successful entrepreneur, launching his own line of spirits, including his popular Earl Stevens Selections wine and a range of other alcoholic beverages. His ventures into the business world have been marked by the same creativity and work ethic that have defined his music career, and they have allowed him to build an empire that reaches beyond the world of hip hop.
E-40 has also been a mentor to many up-and-coming artists, particularly those from the Bay Area. His support for local talent has helped foster a thriving hip hop scene in the region, and his willingness to collaborate with younger artists has kept him connected to the next generation of musicians. By staying relevant and continuing to innovate, E-40 has ensured that his legacy will endure for years to come.
In addition to his business ventures and mentorship, E-40 is also known for his philanthropy. He has consistently given back to his community, supporting various charitable causes and using his platform to raise awareness for issues affecting the Bay Area. Whether through donations to local schools or providing resources to underserved communities, E-40 has remained committed to making a positive impact on the lives of those around him.

Elijah Blake's "elijah." Blends Classic R&B with Contemporary Sounds, Showcasing Emotional Depth
Elijah Blake’s latest album, "elijah.", merges classic R&B with modern influences, exploring themes of love, fame, and personal growth. The project highlights Blake’s rich vocals, emotional vulnerability, and polished production, solidifying his status as a leading R&B artist.
Elijah Blake, a Haitian-Dominican R&B sensation, has been captivating global audiences since his breakthrough in 2015 with the smash single "I Just Wanna...".
Since then, Blake has evolved into a household name in the R&B world, amassing millions of streams, collaborating with industry giants like Usher and Rihanna, and winning a Grammy Award for his contributions to music. With his distinctive vocal range and impressive songwriting skills, Blake has consistently set himself apart in an industry overflowing with talent. His latest project, "elijah.", released in August 2023, further solidifies his place among R&B's elite artists.
This album not only showcases his artistry at its finest but also represents a deeper exploration of his musical identity, blending classic R&B vibes with contemporary, genre-defying elements. This 1500-word analysis will delve into the intricacies of Blake’s newest album, exploring its themes, production, and how it reflects his evolution as an artist.
Video from: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XeBZOMlmthQ
Before diving into the specifics of "elijah.", it is important to appreciate the context in which Elijah Blake has crafted his latest masterpiece. Born Sean Fenton, Blake’s cultural roots in Haiti and the Dominican Republic have informed much of his sound, blending soulful melodies with diverse, multicultural influences. His first taste of mainstream success came with "I Just Wanna...", a track that featured Blake’s signature combination of smooth vocals and heartfelt, relatable lyrics. Over the years, his sound has evolved from straightforward R&B to something much more complex and genre-bending. He has ventured into elements of pop, soul, and even electronic music, all while maintaining the core emotional depth that has characterized his work.
Blake’s versatility and vocal prowess caught the attention of heavy hitters in the music industry. He has written for and collaborated with major artists, including Usher on the hit "Climax" and Rihanna on "No Love Allowed". These partnerships have helped shape his own approach to creating music, allowing him to learn from some of the best while also carving out a lane of his own. "elijah." represents the culmination of these experiences, as Blake steps into the spotlight not only as a collaborator but as a fully realized solo artist.
The Sound of "elijah.": Blending Tradition with Innovation
At its core, "elijah." is a deeply personal project, offering listeners a window into Blake’s soul through the medium of music. The album starts with "Rainberry Woods", a track that instantly draws the listener in with its delicate and atmospheric guitar strings. This intro sets the tone for the entire project, placing Blake’s velvety voice at the forefront, with production that complements rather than overwhelms his vocals. The gentle guitar notes in the background provide a haunting, ethereal quality that allows Blake’s vocal tone to shine.
"Rainberry Woods" is emblematic of the broader sound of the album—soulful, stripped-back in some moments, yet sonically rich and full in others. Blake strikes a balance between paying homage to classic R&B roots while integrating more modern, genre-defying sounds. Tracks like "Sacrifice" and "Sugarwater & Lime" are perfect examples of this. On "Sacrifice", Blake crafts a multi-layered instrumental arrangement that feels intricate and lush, contrasting the smoothness of his vocals. This tension between the instrumental complexity and the simplicity of the vocal melodies creates a sound that is both captivating and easy to get lost in.
"Sugarwater & Lime", on the other hand, takes a different approach. Here, Blake lets his voice flow effortlessly over the beat, creating a more laid-back, groove-oriented track. The lyrics on this song reflect on the difficulties of maintaining love, particularly when life’s challenges seem to conspire against romantic relationships. Blake’s ability to blend emotional vulnerability with sophisticated musicality is one of his strongest assets, and "Sugarwater & Lime" is a perfect showcase of this.
Themes and Lyrical Depth: Love, Loss, and Self-Reflection
One of the defining characteristics of "elijah." is its exploration of complex emotional landscapes. Throughout the album, Blake touches on themes of love, sacrifice, personal growth, and the difficulties of navigating relationships in the modern world. These are familiar themes in R&B, but what sets Blake apart is the rawness and honesty with which he approaches them.
Take "Father Abraham", for instance. This track represents the emotional core of the album, with Blake delving deep into personal and familial struggles. The song’s raw lyricism is a departure from some of the smoother, more polished tracks on the album, but this is precisely what gives it its emotional weight. Blake sings about the lessons passed down from his father and how they have shaped him as a man. The song's gospel-inspired undertones and Blake's impassioned delivery make "Father Abraham" one of the most powerful moments on the album. It leaves a lasting impact not only because of the emotional depth but also because of the vulnerability that Blake is willing to show. It’s a song that many listeners will likely relate to on a deeply personal level.
Blake’s willingness to explore difficult topics continues throughout the album. On tracks like "Daylight" and "Drowning in Gold", he sings about the pressures of fame and the weight of expectation, both external and internal. Fame is a double-edged sword, offering validation but also placing immense pressure on those who experience it. Blake grapples with these complexities in a way that feels sincere and grounded, never veering into self-pity but instead reflecting on the realities of his life with wisdom and maturity.
Love, as always, plays a significant role in Blake’s songwriting. However, in "elijah.", it is not treated as a simple, straightforward concept. Instead, Blake examines love from multiple angles—the joy and passion of new love, the difficulty of maintaining relationships in the face of external pressures, and the inevitable heartbreak that comes when things fall apart. "Ocean Deep" is one track where this is especially evident. Blake’s lyrics here are almost confessional, as he lays bare the pain of love lost. Yet, even in the sadness, there is a sense of acceptance, as though Blake understands that love and loss are both necessary parts of the human experience.
Production: A Polished and Dynamic Experience
The production on "elijah." is a masterclass in modern R&B. The album strikes a balance between minimalism and complexity, with some tracks featuring sparse instrumentation that allows Blake’s voice to take center stage, while others build to grand, multi-layered crescendos. Blake worked with a team of skilled producers to achieve this dynamic sound, including long-time collaborators and new voices who brought fresh perspectives to the project.
One of the standout production elements on the album is the use of live instrumentation. While many contemporary R&B albums lean heavily on electronic beats and synthesized sounds, Blake incorporates real instruments—guitars, pianos, strings—into many of the tracks on "elijah.". This gives the album a warm, organic feel that sets it apart from much of the music being released in today’s heavily digital landscape. "Rainberry Woods", for example, features acoustic guitar strings that evoke a sense of intimacy and immediacy, making the listener feel as though they are sitting in the room with Blake as he sings.
The production is also notable for its attention to detail. Tracks like "Sacrifice" and "Underwater" feature intricate layering of sounds that reward repeated listens. New elements reveal themselves upon each playthrough—whether it’s a subtle harmony tucked into the background or a slight shift in the percussion that changes the mood of the song. This level of craftsmanship is a testament to Blake’s commitment to creating a cohesive and immersive musical experience for his listeners.
Artistic Growth: A New Chapter for Elijah Blake
"elijah." represents a significant step forward for Elijah Blake as both an artist and a storyteller. While he has always been known for his vocal talent and songwriting ability, this album feels like the culmination of everything he has learned over the years. There is a sense of maturity and confidence in these songs that suggest Blake is fully in control of his artistic vision.
In many ways, "elijah." feels like a rebirth. It is both a continuation of the themes Blake has explored in his previous work and a departure from them. The album’s willingness to take risks—whether through its genre-blending sound, its deeply personal lyrics, or its dynamic production—speaks to Blake’s desire to push the boundaries of what R&B can be. At the same time, there is a deep respect for the traditions of the genre, and Blake pays homage to the greats who came before him, while still carving out a path that is uniquely his own.
